MSDOS is a disk operating system for the IBM range (or compatibles) of computers. The MSDOS system resides on diskette (3.5" or 5.25") and the system files may be transferred to a hard disk unit.
An operating system is a program which allows competing programs to share the resources of the computer (memory, disk, devices like printers and modems, and processing time). The operating systems first job is to initialise the hardware of the computer system, before running application programs.
For personal computers, MSDOS is a single user, single tasking operating system. Single user means only one person uses the computer at a time. Single tasking means that it essentially only runs one application program at a time, and has no inherent support for running more than one application program simultaneously.
An operating system provides mechanisms for running programs, handling errors, controlling devices, configuring the computer system, and for MSDOS, a user interface (sometimes called a shell).

41. Where can I find DOS resources on the internet?
A list of good DOS websites can be found at the DOSNET netring: http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=dosnet;action=list.
42. Where can I find the DR DOS license?
At http://www.drdos.net/faq/license.txt.
43. Where can I find the OpenDOS documentation?
You can get the OpenDOS documentation at http://www.thur.de/~igs/USEFULL/OPENDOS/. An alternative to the official documentation is the outstanding file nwdostip.txt in the MPDOSTIP.ZIP archive (http://www.uni-bonn.de/~uzs180/mpdokeng.html#M.MPDOSTIP) from Matthias Paul. This package isn't an official document, but it contains much information about DR-DOS and other DOS related topics like NC and a file with many undocumented features of DR-DOS. Unfortunately, these files only exist in german language.
44. Where can I get information about BATCH programming?
There are several really great FAQs and tutorials around here, Prof. Timo Salmi wrote an outstanding one, for example. BATFAQ by Prof. Timo Salmi, tsbat78.zip (230 KB) 4DOS BATCH FAQ by Klaus Meinhard, http://www.4xbtm.de 3.8 Multitasking with plain DOS? Is that possible? Sure, it is. You need a program like taskmgr.exe in DR-DOS 7.03, but a tool like that clutters your memory like nothing else... Another very good and well-known tool is DesqView, look at http://www.chsoft.com/dv.html and you will know much more about it.
45. Where can I get more material about these DOSes?
For FreeDOS, try http://www.freedos.org DR DOS/OpenDOS: Matthias Paul's must-visit DR-DOS website http://www.drdos.net http://www.drdos.org http://www.drdos.com(official) MS DOS: http://www.microsoft.com IBM DOS: http://www-4.ibm.com/software/os/dos/ (official) PTS DOS: http://phystechsoft.com/en (official) Wolfgang Elsässer's FAQ about PTS-DOS (english version available) Datalight ROM DOS: http://www.datalight.com/rom-dos.htm (official) other: http://dosonly.net 1.6 Where can I get help? Search for DOS newsgroups like comp.os.msdos.misc or de.comp.os.msdos, look at the manufacturer's website(s) you find above, look at the DR DOS forum at http://senac.com/forums/4356/ or at the OpenDOS documentation library at http://www.thur.de/~igs/USEFULL/OPENDOS/. In many cases it's also a big succes to go to your local library to search for old DOS books. They often have some, normally it's not difficult to find them.
